Beer Brewing Software?

Postby inthefreeworld » Mon Nov 20, 2006 2:50 am

Has anyone used any type of beer brewing software? My brother also brews beer, and has a pretty good setup, so I was thinking that it might be a good gift idea. But if nobody else uses it, I'm thinking that I'll probably pass too.

I use BeerSmith, I like it better than Pro Mash, but either would be acceptable.

I have Pro-Mash loaded on my Desktop but haven't used it yet. It looks interesting but after 70 All-Grain batches last year, we haven't found the need to get more technical.

I like and use promash...I really like to keep those crazy recipes. I have tried using SEVERAL notebooks, but those plus all the books I have take up to much space.

Beersmith vs. Pro-Mash

Postby inthefreeworld » Sun Feb 18, 2007 11:36 am

What does Beersmith have that Pro-Mash doesn't? Or is it just easier to use?

I am currently using Qbrew, it's free and not to bad. It lacks some of the calculations that are in more advanced software but again, for free it's pretty good.
Check it out Here

Promash works great. The water profiler doesn't work in demo mode though. I haven't tried any of the other programs.

I have an Apple and up until recently my choices were rather limited. Until recently my only choice was to run ProMash while running Virtual PC on my Apple which is kind of ludicrous.

The choices are still fairly limited but at least there are a few decent brewing software packages that will now work on the Macintosh operating system (i.e. OS X).

I've used BeerTools and BeerTools Pro (http://www.beertools.com). as well as BeerAlchemy (http://www.kentplacesoftware.com/products/BeerAlchemy.html).

BeerTools is an online interactive beer recipe calculator. It seems to work quite well. However, it does not allow more than basic recipe formulation. It does allow one to design mash schedules or perform other brewing related calculations.

BeerTools Pro and BeerAlchemy are similar in that they both allow one to compute recipes involving water treatments, complicated mash schedules etc.

I have both BeerTools Pro and BeerAlchemy.

I like them both!

However, for ease of use I believe I would recommend BeerTools Pro over BeerAlchemy.

Cheers,

Scott
