Bread Yeast for Beer ... and Brewers Yeast

Postby brewersr » Mon Jul 06, 2009 4:24 pm

maduro444 had a post about beer that can be made only using ingredients that can be found at Walmart. That got me thinking of one time when I was trying to get a yeast packet for a batch and couldn't find any in town anywhere. Does anyone know the difference between beer yeast and bread yeast? Also, I've seen brewing yeast as a supplement which at first I thought would work for beer since it's called "brewing yeast". Apparently that's a totally different product. Does anyone have a good grasp on the differences between baking, brewing, and beer yeast? Also, has anyone ever used baking yeast in beer?

when i first started brewing beer it was with blue ribbon malt extract and bakers yeast, it turned out barely drinkable and usually had a couple of bottle bombs in the bunch. when i made hard stuff i would use a lb. of bakers yeast for 90 gals. of mash, but the stilling process got rid of all the off flavors so it turned out pretty good. now with all the different types of yeast available you can tweak your brew anyway you want to, thats the joy of homebrewing.

a great day starts with a good brew

You may have seen "brewers yeast" as a supplement before. We have some for our dogs. It is actual brewing yeast but has been heated and dried and is no longer active(alive).
Beer yeast can be had for $1.00 and i can ship a pack for less than $1.00 so its pretty cheap and you get good beer from it.
I used baking yeast for some grapejuice wine once. It was strong but not real tasty!!

I've actually used bread yeast in a blackberry wine before, and it wasn't bad. The yeast didn't attenuate very well, and the wine finished sweet. It made for a very nice dessert wine. Maybe it's not as good for dry grape wines???

Yeah, I was about to use that supplement brewers yeast a few years ago until I did some reading up about it. Good thing I didn't, that would have been a wasted batch. Brian, I might get in touch with you about sending me some yeast. It's pretty awesome that you can get a packet of yeast to someone for less than two bucks. Most other places that have minimum shipping or something like that make it very unpractical to order just one item. By the way, what's the status on the shoulder?

Sometimes shipping is less than $1.00 even. Depending on where you live.
I can ship beer yeast and wine yeast cheap. Most of my wine yeast is $1.00, my muntons ale yeast is $1.00 and my nottingham 11 gram ale yeast is $1.20(awsome yeast!!)

I had surgery tuesday on my tendon in my elbow and it hurts pretty bad.(they cut it off the bone, ground the bone down, then reattachted it lower so it is not as tight) And i have been sick from the pain killers. So its been a very long week so far. I havent even had a beer since.
But i am hoping next week will be better and maybe i can cut back on the pills.

Ouch!!!

You know it's bad when beer doesn't even sound good.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Ive used bakers yeast in a oat stout and it turned out pretty good got it up to 7%. Seems to me that bakers yeast is neutral, but i dont think i would put to much in the way of funds into the batch if you ever try it.

the key to using bread yeast for brewing is getting the active quick rise yeast ive always had good luck with red star bread yeast although it can tast like s@!t if you add to much try adding alot less it will take longer to ferment and wont be as strong but i use it mainly for what people call prison wine was told that white grape wine tastes better when made from 100% grape concentrate if you add to much it tastes absolutly awful so i cover up the taste with lots of sweet n low i prefer very strong wine the way i make it two cups is one to much gets you to drunk not a good idea made quite a mess last time misjudged exactly how strong it was and drank three cups it snuck up on me and practicaly bit off my a%% then made the mistake of taking a hot shower instead of a cold one, never again!!
