Carboy Cleaning

Postby miguelito » Sat Aug 22, 2009 1:26 pm

I picked up used glass carboy and it needed a little elbow grease to get cleaned up. I soaked it over night with Oxyclean and used a brush on it. It came out pretty good, but there is some small areas inside that still have a slight deposit of very light colored residue. It looks like you would have to use something to scrape it off - a brush is not going to do the trick. Will it be OK to ferment in after proper sanitation? Any suggestions on what I could do to get the remaining residue off with?

I use trisodium phosphate (TSP). It's an industrial cleaner and an overnight soak seems to get rid of just about anything. A tablespoon for 5 gallons will do the trick. Cash and Carry sells it for pretty cheap. If you don't have a Cash and Carry in your area try a restrant supply store or a home improvement store.

I do a 24 hour soak in Phosphoric acid, rinse then soak in Lye (Sodium Hydroxide or Caustic soda) for another 24 hours. Phosphoric acid gets the stone while the lye gets the organics. Clean as can be without scrubbing.

Love the idea!

Hate the price!

Hi Folks,
Has anyone tried the Carboy Cleaner that spins around on a cordless drill?
If so, how'd it go?

I have just bought my first Carboy - now I have the original plastic tub running next to the new Carboy - and they don't look like equals! But the more the merrier :)

Do you guys try the: put a half a glass of rice, with some bicarb soda, some water to paste it up, and some elbow grease!
If anyone has, does it work?

I am going to need to know fairly soon :))

Kind regards,

Scott

What I usually do is, as soon as im done with the carboy it gets filled with HOT water and let it soak until a im done doing whatever it is im doing then empty.

after that I stick a short length of hose in the carboy and blast it with HOT water. Then clean and tip upside down until dry.

Overnight soak in Hot water and Oxyclean. Then a few seconds with a carboy brush (really just enough to say that I did it) and dry.

By the way, I ended up finding a suggestion on another site and tried it. I swished my carboy with some white distilled vinegar. Worked like a champ!

That makes sense to me. We use vinegar to clean a lot of stuff around the house, including the windows. It really works well. What were the effects on your carboy? Did you use it on caked on crud, or that thin film that gets left behind after an overnight soak? Did you rinse the carboy w/vinegar or soak it?

It cleared the film right up and I put in about 1/4 -1/3 cup and swirled all around the carboy. Rinsed with water. Crystal clear.

I would try to blast it off with some high pressure water. I made what might be compared to a nozzle out of 1/4 inch copper tubing and compression tubing from the hardware store, the fittings enabled me to attach to the garden hose, the 1/4 inch tubing can be crimped at the end where the water comes out so as to concentrate the pressure at the same time narrow enough to get past the neck of the carboy and long enough to get to the bottum, or bent to get to the under side of the shoulder of the carboy,... did not cost that much. Good Luck
