coagulated yeast
I made a starter of wyeast 1098 British ale about 10 days ago thinking I'd brew last sunday. Well, that didn't happen so I just added some wort to it to kick it up for this weekend & when I shook it to mix it up I found the yeast so clumped together on the bottom of the bottle it won't mix. I mean, I don't think a lot of it would even pour through the bottleneck if I pitched it. I've been brewing for quite a few years now & don't ever remember seeing yeast so caked. Sound familiar to anyone? What do you think?

Well, in spite of some misgiving about the yeasts appearance I thought it smelled ok so that's what I went on & pitched it to my IPA. Pray for me.

I had a similar issue with White Labs London Ale. I had to fill my flash nearly to the top with sterile wort and shake the hell out if it to get it semi-fluid. I've repitched the same yeast three times now and it does it every time. Fortunately, the beers have turned out great. Hopefully yours will too.
