Have a question to a Problem adding yeast too early

Postby jgarseeya25 » Mon Nov 16, 2009 10:36 am

Im brand new to this forum. I bought a homebrew kit for my pops and we cooked up our second batch tonight. My dad was drinking and brewing lol. He added the liquid yeast way to early, like while the ingredients just finished boiling instead of after waiting for the temp to come down to 90 degrees like the instructions say. Is our batch ruined?

No, the batch isn't ruined but your pop did commit yeast genocide.
You'll need to re-pitch another dose of yeast and you should do it right away.

Good luck,

hahaah, yeast genocide, I like that phrase. By the way, I've committed yeast genocide before and did what Wild said and things turned out to be just fine.

Thanks for your quick responses Wild and brewersr. I think we may be okay then. I bought a liquid yeast in a vile called California ale V and thats what was introduced to the pot early. There was another packet of yeast that was included in the packaged box of ingredients. This packet was sprinkled in at the correct time (after the temp came down to below 90 degrees). So from what I now understand is that we just killed the first yeast off and it did not effect the process in a way that would ruin the batch. Ok, thanks guys, we have a little peace of mind now! whew. by the way we are brewing a Brown Nut Ale, hope it comes out good!

Your first yeast became nutrients for the new yeast!! Try to get below 70 on the next batch!!, Should be good this time though. You can put alot of stuff in while its still boiling and be good. Let us know how it turns out. Keep it under 70 while it ferments!!

+1. It's always best to pitch your yeast at fermenting temperatures, though it won't ruin a batch by pitching a little too high.

A big +1 to this! And just so you know, your wort's temperature can be several degrees higher than room temperature due to fermentation. I keep my carboy in an ice chest half filled with water to prevent this from occurring. The water acts as a heat sink and helps to keep my wort very close to ambient temperature (65 F in my house).

Let us know how your Nut Brown Ale turns out!
