I just noticed some of my wines have something in the air lock. It looks like some sort of mold. I use metabisufite in the bubbler. Should i discard the wines, or do you think they will be OK?

I think it will be OK. I just use water in my air lock since meta bisulphate doesn't last more than 24 hours when in open air. I have noticed some black yukky stuff in my air locks towards the end of 2 months when it is time to rack. If I see it sooner I remove the airlock and replace it with a clean one. Once the alcohol is up to 12% and you are using 1 campden tablet per gallon every other racking or 1/2 campden tablet every racking the wine should be OK.

We live in an area where the barometric pressure changes rapidly and with large movements. It can tend to suck water from the airlock down into the carboy. That is when I become more concerned with the yukky stuff in the airlock and change the airlock. I keep several airlocks on hand so I can just change them out with clean ones, then soak the dirty ones in one step and wash in soap in water to make sure all contamination is gone before using it again.

Thank You Wyo. I use no rinse sanitizer and anti-bacterial soap to clean it. The soap is OK isn't it?
