Regarding Gravity
Correct me if I am wrong.
Gravity is a measurement of how much sugar is in your wort/beer.
If i am using 5 gal of water and Using pre-measured amount of ingredients that should result in a OG: 1.043 - 1.045, why would i get a gravity of 1.052 (12.8) at 77 degrees. I checked this with both a Hydrometer and a Refractometer.
What in the process has caused the gravity be so high.

Re: Regarding Gravity
Sorry, I don't have a great answer for you...are you all-grain, or extract brewing? Hopefully someone here may have some more insight..

Re: Regarding Gravity
I assume the estimated original gravity value of 1.043-1.045 is for a final volume of five gallons.
Did you boil the wort and if so, are you your final volume five gallons?
Off hand this is the only thing I can think of to explain such a large discrepancy in the gravity values.

Indecision is the key to flexibility

Re: Regarding Gravity
I am extract brewing, do not have the equipment to start and all grain brew yet.
I am boiling the extracts liquid and DME in 1.5 gal water, adding it to 3 gal of water, then filling with more water to make 5 gal.

Re: Regarding Gravity
I just had an idea...perhaps it was not fully mixed yet? Is it possible you got a sample that was more "saturated" with sugars than the over-all wort?

I was considering this possibility myself.
