What do you drink when it's not homebrewed?

Postby inthefreeworld » Tue Feb 26, 2008 2:17 pm

Personally, I'm a fan of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, or any pale ale for that matter. If it's not homemade beer, it's probably that or else Killians Red. What does everyone drink when the homebrew keg runs dry?

Well, lately its been SNPA. Sierra Nevada was the beer that got me into home brewing in the first place. While a little hoppy for my tastes, SNPA made me realize that not all beer tastes like Budweiser. Im not sure what the common denominator is with American Lagers, but there's definitely a distinct similarity between all the majors that I dont like. I drank a six pack of Sierra Nevada one day, and the next day began researching homebrewing. A few months later, here I am. I couldnt be happier either. My next batch will be an Irish Red ale. I really hope my wife likes it!
Best of luck on all your brewing!

Cheers

I love Sierra Nevada stuff, they make great beers. When I don't have home brews on hand I do enjoy their Pale Ale, but I'm also a fan of Magic Hat. I also tend to grab an interesting import on occasion. You know, the ones that you see in single bottles tucked away on that corner shelf at the liquor store. Smoked beers, Belgian wheats, Lambics, etc.

But then, I'll try any American microbrew once, just because. :)

There is a Bottle King liquor store nearby with a huge selection of microbrew stuff. I can spend an hour in there just deciding. People walk by and wonder what the heck I'm doing just standing around looking at the various beers. Hey, it's like browsing at the video store, sometimes we're just looking for something that intrigues us.

I go for almost anything except BMC.
I love the stronger ales and am going through the last of the clearance christmas winter warmers right now that I got from www.bevmo.com local stores.

I can't imagine my brewing habit even beginning to keep up with my drink habit! :) I am always looking for the beer I havn't tried before, or, more unusually, the style I never tried.

When push comes to shove, my go-to beer is Fat-Tire. It's what inspired me to brew, and the visits to the brewery are priceless memories! I am lucky enough to live in the "neighborhood" of New Belgium Brewing.

I really like Lieginkoogel(sp) not sure of thats how its speled or pronounced but thats how my friend and I pronounce it. Its a wheat beer, I think its from PA. Strab is also from PA, my Dad turned me on to it, but you can only get it from PA, we've got family up there. Generraly I'll try any micro beer once, and buy more if I like it.

Jeepguy:

I just obtained a 15 gallon brewpot, but need more kegs (CHEAP!)", but am well on my way to actually supporting my "habit" rather than treating all my friends' addictions

Hi all, new to the site and loving it. Also I have to say if I run out of mine I go to Bevmo and just grab something that I have never tried. Ya ya, this has backfired a few times but I have found some real winners this way.

I'm still waiting for my first to be ready to drink.... 2 more weeks in the bottle. So while I wait to taste to fruits of my labor I like to try just about anything. I'm one of those guys that stand in front of all the beer waiting for one to say "Drink Me". My wife says I'm like a kid in a candy shop and I can't make up my mind. But if nothing new stikes me I always go to New Castle. Yum

I'm lucky to have a great craft brewery where I live...I usually have a growler of The Hideout's Hazelnut Stout in the fridge if I'm not drinking my own...

If I'm looking at "mainstream" brews...again, I'm right in the middle of Bells, Founders, New Holland country..

Unfortunately Australian Lagers tend to be of a low quality, or rather they're kind of plain. However there is a really good small brewer called 'Matilda Bay' that makes a really good red lager - Rooftop Red Lager - with crystal malts. And a Honey Wheat Beer called 'beez neez' that I would seriously recomend if you're ever considering Australian Beers. Also Mountain Goat Hightail Ale (another even smaller brewer) is quite good and very hoppy (I think they cram it with fuggles). I'm not sure if these export though. Infact I'm sure Mountain Goat is only in Melbourne. At the moment I'm really fond of 'Pilsner Urquell' which is Czech, and 'Hoegarden' which is Belgian.

I have made an imitation of 'beez neez' which should be ready in 2 weeks. But I'm going to attempt a Red Irish Ale before I try a Red Lager.
