Whole Hops or Pellet?

Postby curlyfat » Tue Jun 02, 2009 10:57 pm

Let's start a fight! :x

Personally, I use them all, although I'm starting to lean towards pellet. They seem more consistent.

I have no issues with either, but with multiple commercial hop fields only miles from my house I prefer whole hops. In fact it seems alot of brewers from the Willamette Valley do. I know Seven Brides, Deschuttes and alot of homebrewers I've met here are proud of their whole hops. With the proximity of the fields it's just easier to pick them up after their dried rather then getting them in pellets.

Admit it, you want to live here now 8)

Go for honey-wheat IPA...I'm intrigued. Let us know how it ends up as well!

Get that vote in the comment section on the blog :) Otherwise my readers (all 12 of them) will wonder where the extra vote for the wheat came from.

i have used pellet hops in the past, and made some very good beer, but now that my own hops have started to produce i have been useing whole hops. i like the way it makes its own filter bed in the boil pot and i get very little trub in the fermenter when i transfer. i still have quite a bunch of pellet hops in the freezer, so i will gradually use them up along with the whole hops.
gary
a great day starts with a good brew

I have only ever encountered hop pellets, and hop pellets in a tea-bag. But if I'm ever living somewhere with appropriate soil then I might grow some of my own, in which case I'd probably just throw lots of them in the fermenter fresh.

i have only used whole once but really no issues with it. I still prefer pellets though mainly because they are easier to weigh out.

I use whole leaf and pellets. I prefer whole leaf but can't find some varieties I like so pellets it is. It seems to go about half and half. I have 4 pounds of whole leaf and 4 pounds of pellets in the freezer right now.

I am in my 4th year of growing my own hops, so I use both. The main difference is the amount of wort absorbtion you get with whole hops but that is easy to compensate for.

PELLET!

Better storage, takes up soooo much less space, doesnt suck up my wort. :)
